Here is the thing about Nepal: you think you know what it is going to be like. You have seen the photos, watched the documentaries, maybe scrolled through a few Instagram reels. Then you actually get there, step onto a trail with the Himalayas towering above you, and realise nothing could have prepared you for how it actually feels. It is one of those places that genuinely changes people, and Australians are particularly well suited to it.
The Scenery is on Another Level
Nepal has eight of the ten tallest mountains on Earth. Let that sink in for a second. You walk through lush rhododendron forests, across suspension bridges with rivers raging below, through villages where chickens scatter as you pass, and then you look up and there is a 7,000 metre peak just casually sitting there in the sky. Every trekking region has its own personality. The Annapurna region is warm and varied, with tea houses every few hours. The Everest region feels historic and grand. Manaslu and Langtang are quieter, wilder, more remote. Whatever flavour of adventure you are after, Nepal has it.
Getting There From Australia is Easier Than You Think
A lot of people assume Nepal is hard to get to. It is not. Flights through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok are straightforward and usually pretty affordable. The visa is simple (you can sort it on arrival), and once you land in Kathmandu, the whole place is set up for trekkers. Gear shops line the streets of Thamel, guides are easy to find, and permits can be sorted in a day. Kathmandu is chaotic and noisy and wonderful, and it is the perfect launchpad for whatever comes next.
There is a Trek for Every Fitness Level
You do not need to be ultra-fit to trek in Nepal. That is one of the best things about it. If you are a first-timer, routes like Poon Hill, Langtang Valley or Mardi Himal are achievable with basic fitness and give you incredible mountain views. If you want something that will properly test you, the Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base Camp or Manaslu Circuit are there waiting. The beauty of Nepal is that you set your own pace. There is no rush. You walk, you eat dal bhat, you sleep, you do it again tomorrow. And gradually, day by day, the mountains get bigger and you feel smaller and more alive.
It is a Cultural Experience as Much as a Physical One
Trekking in Nepal is not just about the mountains. It is about the people. You walk through villages where families wave you in for tea. You stay in tea houses run by locals who cook you dal bhat so good you will crave it when you get home. You sit around tables in the evenings swapping stories with trekkers from all over the world. You see Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags strung across mountain passes, and festivals that fill the trails with colour and music. It gets under your skin in the best way. People come back from Nepal talking about the people as much as the peaks, and that tells you something.
When Should You Go?
Nepal has two prime trekking windows: spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Both are brilliant for different reasons. Autumn gives you crystal-clear skies after the monsoon and some of the best mountain views you will ever see. Spring brings warmer temperatures and rhododendron forests in full bloom, which is spectacular. For Aussies, both windows line up nicely with our holiday calendar. If you want quiet trails and do not mind the cold, winter (December to February) is a hidden gem at lower altitudes.
