Nepal has two prime trekking seasons, and both of them line up brilliantly with Australian holiday windows. Whether you prefer post-monsoon clarity with the crispest mountain views imaginable, or spring warmth with wildflowers carpeting the trails, here is when to go and what each season actually feels like on the ground.
1. Autumn (September to November)
Why go: Clear skies, stable weather, and freshly washed trails after the monsoon.
Weather: 15-20 °C in lower regions, crisp at higher altitudes.
Top routes: Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit, Manaslu Circuit.
Local bonus: The Dashain and Tihar festivals light up the country with colour and culture.
2. Spring (March to May)
Why go: Mild weather and rhododendrons in bloom.
Weather: Pleasant days up to 25 °C, cool nights.
Top routes: Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal, Langtang Valley.
Aussie bonus: Perfect escape from southern-hemisphere autumn.
Off-Season Trekking
Winter (Dec to Feb): Clear skies, quieter trails, and cheaper rooms. The mountains look incredible against deep blue winter skies. Just avoid the high passes (Thorong La, for example) as they can be snowed in. Lower altitude treks like Poon Hill and the lower sections of Langtang are perfect for winter.
Monsoon (Jun to Aug): Wet, muddy, and full of leeches. Not ideal for most treks. The exception? Upper Mustang and Dolpo sit in the Himalayan rain shadow, so they are actually stunning and dry during monsoon. If you can only travel in our winter, these are hidden gems.
The Sweet Spot for Aussies
If you can travel in late September to mid-November or March to April, you are golden. Both windows align perfectly with Australian holidays and school breaks, and the weather in Nepal is at its best. Plan a two to three week trip with a few rest days in Kathmandu or Pokhara at each end, and you have got yourself a properly unforgettable Himalayan adventure. We can help you figure out the exact dates that work best for your chosen trek.
